Multi-Agency Sideshow Enforcement Results in Arrests

Press Release: Multi-Agency Side Show Enforcement
Published: May 5, 2025

A multi-agency enforcement effort to combat the growing trend of dangerous sideshows took place on Friday, May 2nd in the City of Salinas. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Salinas Police Department, Monterey County District Attorney’s Office and Monterey Area California Highway Patrol have been working together to combine resources with a focus on reducing sideshow activity.

All agencies involved brought together about 40 sworn personnel, including CHP Coastal Division’s Air Operations, to respond to a large gathering at a parking facility on East Boronda Road. At one point, over 100 cars were present to participate and spectate at the sideshow.

80 citations were issued, with approximately 65 of those for misdemeanor violations.

4 vehicles were towed in connection with those violations.

6 vehicles were referred to the State Referee for illegal modifications.

Further investigation is underway in connection with violations that occurred.

Participating in a sideshow can result in a 30-day court ordered vehicle seizure and a criminal charge. Spectating at a sideshow is now a crime and will be enforced.

The ultimate goal of this joint effort is to make Monterey County safer for everyone. These sideshows are dangerous to spectators, participants, and innocent bystanders, and as such, these agencies are committed to strict enforcement at these events.

If you would like to submit photos or video evidence or provide a witness statement to the illegal sideshow that occurred on the evening of Friday, May 2nd near East Boronda Road and North Sanborn Road, please call the Anonymous Tip Line for Salinas Police Department at 831-775-4222, visit mcso.countyofmonterey.gov and select Reports & Forms for anonymous tips or call Monterey Area – CHP at 831-770-8000.
